Sample Objectives

The following is a list of more sample evaluation objectives that define the “what”, “from whom”, “how”, “by whom”, and “when” of an evaluation. As long as these elements are present, the order in which they appear is not significant. These samples include objectives for formative, process, and outcome evaluations.



Sample 1:

By October, 2004 (when), trained staff (by whom) will conduct 10 interviews and 4 focus groups (how) with current program participants in the No Tobacco Tolerance coalition (from whom) to determine to what degree they are able and willing to use the clean indoor air educational materials (what) distributed in January, 2004.
 

Sample 2:
Using smoking data collected from youth in five high schools in Leon County (from whom) through the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) (how), by December 2009, (when), the evaluator (by whom) will determine the decline in the rate of smoking cessation over a 5-year period among minority youth in Leon County (what).
 
Sample 3:
By October 2004 (when), the staff at Cessation Services International in Austin (from whom) will be interviewed (how) by an evaluation consultant (by whom) to identify the adequacy and appropriateness of the program management (what).
 
Sample 4:
By May 2005 (when), the student intern (by whom) will review (how) all materials distributed by the program (from whom) to determine the proportion of pictures that include minority youth (what).
 
Sample 5:
By June 30, 2006 (when), the evaluation assistant (by whom) will conduct a telephone interview (how) with the manager of each of the three American Indian owned and operated casinos in the Tri-County region (from whom) to determine whether they have adopted and implemented a second-hand smoke policy that provides for, at a minimum, one smoke-free night per week (what).
 
Sample 6:
Using total numbers of students by race/ethnicity from the schools, and number of students participating in the program by race/ethnicity (from whom and how), the data analyst (by whom) will statistically compare the proportion of youth of each race/ethnicity who are attending the program (what) by May 31, 2005 (when).
 
Sample 7:
The lead evaluator (by whom) will administer a brief telephone survey (how) of administrative officers (from whom) by September 30, 2005 (when), to determine the number of companies who have adopted policies banning smoking within 25 feet of building entries (what) in the group visited by program staff and in the comparison group.
