Organizational Summary

What is the mission of your organization with respect to tobacco cessation?

The Smoking Cessation Leadership Center at the University of California, San Francisco, is a national program office of the Robert Wood John son Foundation. Under the direction of Dr. Steven A. Schroeder, SCLC works with leaders of various health professions and organizations to promote and support effective treatment and policies to help people quit tobacco use.

What types of products or services do you offer presently?

We can assist with small grants, free consulting, and technical assistance. Our work with organizations has included:

  • Facilitation of summits and national task force meetings
  • Convening leaders and experts on smoking cessation
  • Marketing and public relations consulting
  • Funding for national projects
  • Speeches, presentations and panels at annual meetings
  • Web site assessment
  • Articles and research materials

What are any current initiatives underway in your organization regarding tobacco cessation? What projects are you undertaking this year? What are you funding?

Current initiatives underway in SCLC include:

  • Dentist cessation intervention project with the American Dental Association
  • National business case project for cessation coverage with Tobacco-Free Coalition of Oregon (TOFCO)
  • Nurses leadership and advocacy project with UCLA School of Nursing, Tobacco Free Nurses, and Dana Farber Cancer Institute
  • Organized labor project with Harvard University
  • Pharmacists cessation project with Yale University and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)
  • Family physicians’ cessation project with the American Academy of Family Physicians
  • Setting a new benchmark for prevalence levels with Kaiser Permanente Northern California Tobacco Dependence Program
  • Dental hygienists’ smoking cessation initiative with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association
  • Study of best and worst performing hospitals regarding tobacco interventions and 3 conditions with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
  • Task force on smoking cessation in hospital emergency rooms with the American College of Emergency Physicians

What projects/initiatives are you considering for next year?

We will continue to broaden our reach to various health professional organizations and institutions willing to work with us. We will create more partnerships and provide technical assistance to groups. We will continue to fund worthy projects.
