North
American Quitline Consortium
Organizational Summary
What is the mission of your organization with respect
to tobacco cessation?
The North American Quitline Consortium (NAQC) seeks to unite
health departments, quitline service providers, researchers
and national organizations in the United States and Canada
to enable these quitline professionals to learn from each
other and to improve quitline services.
NAQC's mission is to:
- Maximize the access, use, and effectiveness of quitlines;
- Provide leadership and a unified voice to promote quitlines;
and
- Offer a forum to link those interested in quitline operations.
What types of products or services do you offer presently?

Working group meetings and activities.
What are any current initiatives underway in your
organization regarding tobacco cessation? What projects are
you undertaking this year? What are you funding?
This is our initial year of operations, so we are planning
to develop some basic materials for our website, including
fact sheets and better practices documents. In addition, we
will be focusing efforts on the following initiatives:
- Second annual NAQC survey of quitlines (first was completed
in June 2004; we hope to field a revised online survey of
quitlines in the US and Canada in September 2005)
- Implementation of the minimal data set for evaluating
quitlines (pilot studies underway already; hope that all
quitlines in North American will begin data collection in
Sept 2005)
- Developing communications activities by enhancing www.NAQuitline.org
with a password protected area for “members only”.
This area will contain bulletin boards and special materials
for those engaged in quitline activities. We also plan to
begin distributing a number of E-publications (newsletter
and bulletins)
- Beginning to work on policy issues. This includes follow
up with CMS regarding its coverage of tobacco cessation
services for Medicare beneficiaries (see our comments to
CMS on the NAQC website; we hope CMS will include quitlines
as providers of cessation services).
What projects/initiatives are you considering for
next year?
We have not yet begun planning for 2006. I would expect to
focus on strategies to maintain stable funding for quitlines,
continuation of best practices work, and facilitation of research
activities (bringing together researchers and quitlines).
Who are the people in your organization that are
actively working on tobacco cessation?
Staff:
Linda Bailey, Executive Director
Tamatha Thomas-Haase, Consultant-manager, Tools & Resources
working group
Brenda Bryan, Consultant-manager, Research & Evaluation
working group
In addition to staff, NAQC members play leadership roles
on working groups and the advisory committee.
