American
Legacy Foundation
Organizational Summary
What is the mission of your organization with respect
to tobacco cessation?
American Legacy Foundation’s mission is to build a
world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.
What types of products or services do you offer presently?
The American Legacy Foundation is committed to reducing tobacco
use in the U.S. by promoting a range of cessation programs.
To raise national awareness and help reduce the toll of the
epidemic of smoking-related diseases specifically among women
in the U.S., the foundation has developed print and television
ads that feature real women struggling with tobacco-related
illnesses. Free information services on how to quit smoking
are available via a toll-free telephone number (1-800-4-A-LEGACY)
and the Internet (women.americanlegacy.org).
The foundation's Great Start campaign, the first national
media and quitline campaign to help pregnant women quit smoking,
is also a part of the women and smoking initiative. Pregnant
women who want to quit smoking can obtain free, confidential
counseling and educational materials in English and Spanish,
24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling toll-free 1-866-66-START.
Educational materials associated with this campaign are available
on the foundation's Web site.
The foundation's Circle of Friends: Uniting to be Smoke-Free
program is a national grassroots social movement to show support
for women struggling to quit smoking, and to highlight the
toll of tobacco-related disease on American women, their families
and communities. Smokers who want to quit or non-smokers who
want to support a friend or loved one can "Join the Circle"
by calling 1-800-243-7000 or visiting www.join-the-circle.org.
An advertising campaign called Portraits promotes the Circle
of Friends movement by featuring celebrities who are passionate
about this issue.
Other programs that Legacy has offers on a state or local
basis are:
- American Legacy Foundation’s Learn to Quit Call
Center is a free telephone (1-800-399-5589) service that
pairs smokers in the Metropolitan Washington DC area with
professional counselors equipped to guide them through the
quitting process. Phone counseling and mailed educational
and support materials help smokers develop their own plan
of action to quit. The Learn to Quit Center also provides
information and local resources to callers who want to help
their friends and loved ones quit. Services are available
in both English and Spanish.
- Co-operative Advertising Partnership Program: The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes that
comprehensive tobacco control programs are essential to
reduce the burden of tobacco-related death and disease in
the United States. To assist state and local organizations
in strategic development and execution of proven marketing
communications programs, the foundation began the Co-operative
Advertising Partnership Program. The Co-operative Advertising
Partnership Program makes foundation-produced counter-marketing
campaigns available to agencies, non-profit organizations
and other partners for local use at no charge. The foundation
also provides dollar-for-dollar matching media funds to
ensure the success of these campaigns. If your organization
is looking for effective ways to generate long-term health-related
and fiscal benefits, even on a restricted budget, get involved
in this program. To find out more, visit www.americanlegacy.org/mediacenter.
