Foothill College—Smokescreen Project
Public college located in Los Altos Hills, California
Enrollment: 17,493
Type/Category: Curriculum Infusion
Program: The Foothill College Smokescreen
Project aims to raise awareness about tobacco-related issues,
expose myths about smoking, and offer cessation programs.
A key component of this program is a prevention curriculum
that both educates students and prepares them to inform the
campus community about the health risks of tobacco, the politics
of “Big Tobacco” companies, and cessation.
This tobacco prevention curriculum has been successfully
infused into classes such as Creative Typography, Communication
Design, Web Publishing, Motion Graphics, and Digital Imaging
and Illustration. Enrolled students participate in a variety
of tobacco-related projects, including:
- Creating tobacco education and cessation posters
- Designing multi-page informational websites
- Producing video ads that expose the dangers of tobacco
use
- Drafting editorial illustrations on various tobacco issues
Top projects may be awarded prizes, chosen for production,
or displayed at the statewide health conference.
Costs: The Foothill Smokescreen project
is funded by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department
Tobacco Prevention and Education Program and the Tobacco Control
Coalition.
