Founding Organizations

TTAC was established through a unique partnership of three national organizations with a common vision and a commitment to providing ongoing guidance and expertise to new and established tobacco prevention and control programs across the country. Major grants from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Legacy Foundation and the American Cancer Society came together in 2001 to support the development of TTAC.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is the largest US foundation devoted to improving the health and health care of all Americans. Their grantmaking is concentrated in four areas: to assure that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable cost; to improve care and support for people with chronic health conditions; to promote healthy communities and lifestyles; to reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse- tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs.

American Legacy Foundation

The American Legacy Foundation (Legacy) is a national, independent public health foundation established in 1999 as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement between a coalition of attorneys general in 46 states and five US territories and the tobacco industry. Legacy fights for the health and well being of all generations by challenging tobacco use in America through its focus on four major goals: to reduce youth tobacco use; to decrease exposure to secondhand smoke; to increase successful quit rates; to reduce disparities in access to prevention and cessation services and in exposure to secondhand smoke.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization with state divisions and more than 3,400 local offices. ACS is committed to fighting cancer through balanced programs of research, education, patient service, advocacy and rehabilitation. Their efforts to prevent cancer, save lives, and diminish suffering from cancer are focused on four program areas: Research; Cancer Information Service; Advocacy and Public Policy; and Community Programs and Services.
