Organizational Description
In operation since April 1999, the American Legacy Foundation was created as a result of the Master Settlement Agreement between tobacco manufacturers and a coalition of 46 state Attorneys General.  Legacy’s mission is to build a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.  The foundation’s mission is:

• To arm all young people with the knowledge and tools to reject tobacco
• To eliminate disparities in access to tobacco prevention and cessation services.

Supported by the American Legacy Foundation, the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies is newly established and will provide the needed research infrastructure to help facilitate the conduct of rigorous tobacco-related research.

Job Description
The Schroeder Institute (SI) for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies is recruiting for five (5) research scientists at all levels from postdoctoral fellows to senior scientists. In collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Health, Behavior and Society, the SI is envisioned as a transdisciplinary center where collaborative, integrative tobacco-control research is nurtured and flourishes.

Strategically and conveniently located in Washington, DC, the SI will play a national leadership role in identifying new research agendas as well as in conducting research, training, and policy studies in tobacco use. Under the direction of Dr. David Abrams, the SI will focus its attention on pressing and emergent challenges to research and policy that, if addressed, will be the key leverage/tipping points to making a stronger more efficient public health impact on reducing tobacco use.

Candidates must be excellent research scientists who embrace team science and can develop an independent, extramurally funded line of research that extends the SI mission. Areas of focus include but are not limited to: expanding consumer awareness (social marketing, consumer demand, and communications research); improving interventions (new and efficient treatment models, mechanisms to sustain long term cessation); vulnerable and hard to reach and treat groups (those with co-morbidities, HIV/AIDS, racial/ethnic minorities); research on harm minimization; and use of new technology and methods to inform policy and practice (tracking devices and sensors, economic modeling, simulation, systems integrative and other multi-level computational, mathematical and statistical strategies).

This exciting opportunity will enable scholars to participate in a unique research environment that capitalizes on partnerships designed to optimize the advantages found at the interface between academic, philanthropic, and research entities.
