The Tobacco Control Legal Consortium has an immediate opening for a full-time staff attorney. The position is located at the Tobacco Law Center, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit corporation affiliated with the William Mitchell College of Law, a century-old independent nonprofit  law school in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The Tobacco Control Legal Consortium is a national network of legal resource centers dedicated to advancing tobacco policy change in the United States by giving advocates better access to legal expertise. The Consortium serves as a legal resource for the national tobacco control community and an academic think tank on tobacco law

The Staff Attorney will provide legal technical assistance to state and local public health agencies, community groups, public health advocacy organizations and others who are working to pass tobacco control laws and policies.  In addition, this position will: draft information about legal issues related to tobacco control and public health for the Consortium’s website; assist with the preparation of amicus briefs; provide litigation assistance to state and local government agencies defending tobacco control laws; identify proactive litigation opportunities; assist with educational and training presentations; and participate in grant writing and other program development activities.  Some travel will be required. 

Qualifications include admission to the bar and 3 years of experience in the practice of law.  Preference will be given to attorneys with experience in municipal or public health law.  Excellent legal research, writing and public speaking skills are required. Candidates with experience drafting, implementing, or enforcing local or state laws are preferred. Some travel is required. This is a new, grant-funded position and is dependent on the continued availability of funding.  We currently have funding for one year.
