The Epidemiology Branch is the lead scientific unit within OSH and has responsibility for national research and surveillance activities as well as systematic evaluation of state and local tobacco control programs. The selected individual:

  • Serves as a senior member of the management team for OSH and plays a key role in setting objectives and in the formulation of broad policies, methods and procedures.

  • Participates in OSH–wide strategic planning efforts, staffing decisions and in securing and managing fiscal and personnel resources.

  • Provides leadership for planning, assigning, scheduling, and reviewing the work of branch staff ensuring that accuracy and quality requirements are met and evaluating work performance.

  • Consults and collaborates with internal and external partners and provides leadership for epidemiologic research, new strategies and interventions for tobacco use prevention and control and health related effects of tobacco use.
  • Directs national surveillance efforts relative to tobacco and coordinates surveillance activities along with appropriate agencies.

  • Represents OSH, NCCDPHP, and CDC in meetings with leaders and key officials of Federal, State, and foreign health agencies, and private sector organizations involved with tobacco and health.

  • Exercises scientific, administrative and technical supervision over all branch staff.

The Epidemiology Branch provides national leadership in program design, interventions, and initiatives; plans, develops, and carries out epidemiologic research and surveillance of tobacco use and associated risk factors and health consequences; evaluates interventions related to tobacco use prevention and control programs; provides technical assistance to official State and local health agencies as well as national organizations seeking to reduce tobacco use and associated risk factors and health effects; and implements intervention programs through State and Local health agencies and managed care and other medical delivery organizations. The Office on Smoking and Health Epidemiology Branch consists of three teams (Evaluation Team, Research Development Team and Analytic Research and Surveillance Team) comprised primarily of health scientists, epidemiologists, public health analysts, a senior evaluator and a toxicologist. In addition, there are also ORISE Fellows, an EIS Officer, support staff and contract staff assigned to the branch. There is also a Deputy Branch Chief and Senior Scientific Advisor who provide direct support to the Branch Chief on a daily basis.
